Description

An article that features the USNS Kingsport. The USNS Kingsport is the United States first satellite communications ship, which arrived here on the island on April 8. The Kingsport is operated by the Military Sea Transportation Service. Her last service as at Africa and in the Mediterranean with the SNCOM Project. The Kingsport was also part of the Surface Station Network from the U.S. Army Satellite Communications Agency. The vessel was a former Victory Cargo Ship, converted from her previous station at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Her captain is Willard Reddell of Staten Island, New York, and is manned by an MSTS civil service crew; a part of the crew is a group that makes up the ship’s Satellite Communications Research and Development Detachment.

The Communications Center at NAS Agana has been stated to be the relay station for the Department of Defense
