Description

An article from the Guam Times Weekly staff that discusses Saipan. A brief history is given of the island: how geographically Guam and Saipan are similar, only being 120 miles apart; having been discovered by Spanish in 1521 and 1526 respectively; claimed as Spanish territory by a Spanish explorer, Legazpi, in 1565; the arrival of Christianity by Father Luis De San Victores starting in 1668; the selling of the Marianas and the Carolines to Germany around 1898, 1899; Japanese possession of Saipan in 1914, then Japanese rule in 1920; under American government from 1944 to 1947; and set up to be and currently part of the Trust Territory. After Saipan’s history is climate and weather are introduced – similar to Guam though not quite; Saipan has more of a rural, temperate feel. Following the weather, the would be the standards of living, such as living conditions and infrastructure – both are slightly behind on Western American and Guam standards but have a quality to them that invokes a natural, honest living, and content lifestyle. Places to see on Saipan include the Saipan Hotel, the Grotto, Bird Island and Marpi Airfield
