Medical Directors Hold Conference – A Territory wide medical conference starts May 12th in Saipan and will include: James W. Sampson, Director of Medical Services; Dr. Jose L. Chong, Dr. Robert Gloor, Marianas District; Dr. John Iman, the Marshalls; Dr. Masao Kumanangai, Dr. Luke A. Howe, Palau; Dr. Ciro Barbosa, Ponape; Dr. Ngas Shoote, Truke; Dr. Antonio Golbuu, Dr. Clarence D. Peters, Yap; and representatives from the Headquarters Medical Services Department. High Commissioner M.W. Goding will address the conference

Saipan Scene:

Club Toppa Tappi, the Mariana Islands District Community Club opened Saturday, May 9th, under new management: William C. Nabors, chairman; Mrs. Ida Gibson, vice-chairman; Janet G. Candland, secretary; Lolita Hohnsbeen, treasurer; Mrs. Pat Robinson, manager; Mrs. Helen Wilson, chairman of the new entertainment committee. Visitors can be guest members to the club by contacting Membership Committee Chairman Betty O’Connell at the Trust Territory Headquarters, Saipan.

Olympia T. Borja from the Saipan Municipal Congress, is back after a stay in the Dr. Torres Hospital in Saipan

Dr. William V. Vitarelli, the Assistant Administrator, Palau District, arrived in Saipan to meet with High Commissioner M.W. Goding

Taitano Sings for One Year – Richard F. Taitano, Deputy High Commissioner of the Trust Territory, signed a one-year contract with the Trust Territory Headquarters in Saipan; Taitano pledged to do everything within his power to push programs designed for the improvement of Micronesia

TT Leaders Get State Dept. Grants – High Commissioner M.W. Goding nominated Judge Kabua Kabua, Congressman John Anjain, and Joab Sigrah for the Leadership Grants. Recipients of the Leadership Grant can visit Washington D.C. and the New York World’s Fair. Kabua is a District Court Judge of the Marshalls District, is of the Iroij Laplap, paramount chiefs of the Marshalls Islands. Anjain, also from the Marshalls, is from Rongelap Island. Sigrah, the Council of Micronesia delegate from Kusaie Island in the Ponape District, represents his island from his district and is known within the public school system

Library Course to be Conducted on Guam – a sub-regional library training course for the Territory of Guam and the Pacific Trust Territory will start next month. The South Pacific Commission will the head the training, which will be co-directed by Trust Territory Library Supervisor Daniel J. Peacock and the Guam Head Librarian, George H. Droste. The idea of the training was conceived by Harold V. Bonny of the UNESCO; Bonny reported the need for more librarians in the Pacific area. Final arrangements and details were completed in April by Dr. Richard Seddon, South Pacific Commission’s Executive Officer for Social Development, and Trust Territory Library Supervisor Daniel Peacock. The list of participants is not yet available

60 Scholarship Awards Announced – The Trust Territory Government awarded 60 two-year district scholarships to Micronesian students who will start this fall. High Commissioner M.W. Goding said that this is the high number of scholarships awarded per year. From the 60, 42 will attend the College of Guam, and the rest will go to either the University of the Philippines College of Agriculture, Honolulu Technical School, or specific schools in the United States. TT Citizens Get UN Fellowships – The Office of the High Commissioner announced that four Trust Territory citizens have been awarded the United Nations Technical Assistance fellowships for study in their respective fields: Prudencio Manglona, Rota’s Administrative Aid, administrative activities; Manuel T. Sablan, Marianas District Sheriff, social defense; Rose Makwelung, Ponape District Women’s Interest Officer, community development; and Tomisiano Martin, Acting Sheriff of Ponape District, social defense

UN Trusteeship Hearings Begin May 26; Remengesau Named Micronesian Representative – Thomas Remegesau, from Palau, was nominated by High Commissioner M.W. Goding to be the Micronesian advisor that will serve on the U.S. Mission to the United Nations for the UN Trusteeship Council on May 26th. High Commissioner Goding annually serves as the Special Representative of the Administering Authority before the Trusteeship Council to report on conditions and activities in the Trust Territory. Additionally, High Commissioner Goding that John E. DeYoung, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Public Affairs, will serve as a special consultant. High Commissioner Goding and his two advisors will head to Washington D.C. for the State Department’s US Mission to the UN, then to the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Furthermore, the three will also evaluate the trust territories of Papua and New Guinea, which is run by Australia on the behalf of governments of Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom
