Description

ALWAYS ADEPT in coining phrases, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur uttered the most memorable of all when he was ordered from beleagured Bataan and Corregidor to Austrailia to assume supreme command of Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific in 1942. He fullfilled his promise -'I shall return' - on Oct. 20, 1944, when his troops swarmed ashore in the Philippines. Second only to this in the memory of the public was his statement, upon being relieved of his command in Korea in 1951, that he would 'just fade away, an old soldier who tried to his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty.'
