Description

An article that covers the Andersen Art Show. The Andersen Art Show as held at the Andersen Air Force Base, in the new Military Air Transport Terminal. The show was divided into several sections, including the Sankei collection of Japanese art, selections from the College of Guam, and submissions from Hawaiian artists, works by school children, pieces from the United States Air Force Collection, and from individual artists from Andersen AFB. Attending the show on Thursday was Governor Manuel F.L. Guerrero and Mrs. Guerrero, Admiral Thomas A. Christopher and Mrs. Christopher, Brig. Gen. Harold W. Ohlke and Mrs. Ohlke, Col Henry F. Ledbetter and Mrs. Ledbetter, Col. Edward C. Unger and Mrs. Unger, and High Commissioner M. Wilfred Goding from the Trust Territory – the Masters of Ceremony was Chaplain (Maj.) Alfred L. Alley. Prior to the show, Governor Guerrero had issued a proclamation that April 16-19 would be ‘Art Comes to Andersen Days’. The highlight of the event was the awarding of prizes from General Ohlke. Joanne Dean won first prize in the paintings and drawings category, Ellen Wishik second, and Wishik also had an honorable mention within the same category – other honorable mentions include Chaplain Alley and Lois Ballard. Mary Lawbaugh won first place in prints and graphics category. L.M. Teague won an honorable mention in the art objects category. Anne Schneider, George Roland, and Carol Ledbetter were honorable mentions in the junior category. Robert Gebing was judged as the best military entry. TSgt. Rafael Reyes, Headquarters Squadron, won the contest to select an emblem for the 3960th Strategic Wing. Featured artworks include a brush writing by the late Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto and Admiral Heihachiro Togo. The final art piece to be presented would be from Mr. Naka Funada, Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives, in the form of a brush writing. The Hawaiian collection was brought by William McGonagle, the curator of exhibitions at the Honolulu Academy of Art
