Description

A MARSHALLESE NATIVE known only as “Martin” (right) translates the instructions of Richard J. Umhofer, local representative of the District Administrator, Marshall Islands, for native leaders on Ebeye. This was the natives’ final briefing before the repatriation to the island of Rongelap, which was evacuated in 1954, when showered with radioactive fallout from the Bikini H-bomb blast.
