Description
An article about the past Red Cross operations on Guam and this year's [1964] upcoming drive and campaign. This year, Allen Sekt is in charge of the overall campaign - Sekt is a local businessman and TV personality - and is working with a fresh executive committee for the campaign - Al Nobriga, Jeannette C. Veyette, Lydia Dungca, and Ana Fejeran. The entire executive staff is optimistic that the island will not only meet their goal of $35,000 but exceed it as well. Dungca's area of work would involve home services, assistance in obtaining government benefits, financial assistance, and personal and familial counseling. Veyett is a registered nurse and is in charge of nursing services - Veyett teaches Red Cross hospitality and nursing courses for free, nurses aid courses, courses for the sick and injured. From the nurses courses Veyett taught, 26 nurses aides certificates were awarded in June, 13 each from U.S. Naval Hospital and Guam Memorial Hospital. Also from the free courses that Veyett taught, from them 344 people were given first aid certificates in both military and civilian spheres. Veyett and her volunteers helped the Department of Medical Services for doses of the Sabin polio virus vaccines. Veyett is proud that Guam has a 'walking blood drive' as no spare blood is actually stored in a facility, but rather in the veins of the people who are readily and willing to part with it. Part of the safety courses, though not under Veyett, is the water safety program, headed by Betty Bush. Part of Bush's accomplishments were the 1205 swimming and life certificates given between 1962 and 1963, under Bush's command. Bush's training took place at USO Hoover Beach, Naval Station, Nimitz Hill, and Andersen Air Force Base pools. Spread throughout the article are photos of various members of Guam's Red Cross organization. The first photo has a group of people in an office setting all posing for the camera, included are: Allen Sekt, Gordon Wongham, Mary Chappelle, Tersita Salas, Cindy Williams, Joe Taitano, Msgr. Guerrero, Frank Sablan, Al Nobriga, Leon Flores, and Ben Reyes. A second photo shows two men shaking hands as they stand before a Red Cross drive goal, included are: Allen Sekt and Al Nobriga. A third photo shows three women in nursing gear as they look at the camera, included are: Jeanette C. Veyett, Ana Fejeran, and Lydia Dungca. Another photo shows men and women in different dress, some are in plains clothes while most are in swim wear, included Frank Nickel, Betty Bush, and their students who were awarded with the water safety certificates. A final photo shows volunteer nurses aides behind a table as they pose: Jeanette C. Veyett, Rosa Mafnas, Margaret Poole, Bill Mafnas, Joe Erickson, Alverra Camp, Elizabeth Gofigan and Jane Martinez
