Description
A Super Constellation aircraft fromVW-1 experienced mechanical difficulties on their flight traveling to Japan, the nose wheel failed to lock in place though the craft made a successful emergency landing at Atsugi Naval Air Station. Lt. Anthony Apap, the pilot, did such a successful job piloting the plane that one passenger said that it felt like ‘landing on flat tires… but smoother…’ Cdr. William Parks, the relief pilot, eased the passengers fears as he joked with them, all the while passing along relevant information during their time of crisis. Lt. Richard Thrope, VW-1 Flight Surgeon, ensured that the passengers were ready for a crash landing at worst. Cdr. Ralph Dannettell, the plane commander of the trip and of the VW-1 CO, decided the emergency landing at NAS Atsugi. Cdr. Alfred Terry from the ComNavMar Staff said that all craft personnel and military presence did such a good job that the passengers only realized the gravity of their situation once they were safely on the ground
